Ash house at Bullaton

Ash houses are very much a local phenomenon on Dartmoor. Very few occur outside south-east Dartmoor, and out of those known to the National Park Authority, 85% are found in Lustleigh, Manaton, North Bovey, Chagford and Moretonhampstead parishes. Dartmoor ash houses are built of granite and have a stone conical roof which is covered with turf to keep it waterproof.
