Kelly Mine Workforce of 1907

Kelly Mine Workforce of 1907

Kelly Mine was used to extract iron oxide, known locally as "shiny ore", from the deposits running between Bovey Tracey and Moretonhampstead. These Dartmoor deposits were the only commercially viable ones in Great Britain. This photograph shows the Kelly Mine workforce of 1907. They are all wearing "Yorks" around their trousers. These were straps placed just below the knee which kept the bottom of the trouser clear from some of the mud and minimised wear when kneeling.
