Snow in Lustleigh
In 1947 the snow coated the branches of the trees in Lustleigh. These then thawed and froze again, leaving each twig encased in ice. The result was beautiful, with each branch twinkling in the light, turning pale pink and gold at sunrise and sunset. Locally, this became known as the "Ammil", a Dartmoor term referring to a thin coating of ice. The word originates from the Old English "Ammel", now known as enamel, meaning a glass-like substance used for decoration.
