Hameldown Cross

Hameldown Cross

Burnard called it Hameldon Cross. The Ordnance Survey call it Hamel Down Cross. The photograph was taken in May 1989 and described as 'remains of Hameldon Cross'. The cross was shaped from coarse porphyritic granite and has an inscription on its east face showing 'H C, D S, 1854'. This is interpreted as 'Hameldon Cross, Duke of Somerset, engraved 1854'. The cross is considered to be much older than 1854 but it was used by the Duke in 1854 to mark the boundary of his Natsworthy Manor estate.
