The Forest Inn, Hexworthy
This is the Forest Inn as it appeared in 1888. It is a Duchy property and has always been a popular inn or ale house. In the early years of the 20th century, the landlord of the inn was Frank Cleave (Hemery, //High Dartmoor//). Today, the Forest Inn looks very different. In 1913 the inn suffered a major fire leaving only a small portion of the old building intact. Three years later, a new building was developed on the site, with a slate roof replacing the thatch. It is reported that William Crossing compiled some of his 1909 book, //Guide to Dartmoor//, whilst staying at the Forest Inn. Indeed, the story is that Crossing used to return very late to the inn after his walks on the moor, often having to wake the landlord and his wife.
