Covered Trough
The location where this photograph was taken in 1888 is not known. Burnard comments on the photograph that "the cover over trough is said to be the flat table which about 100 years ago was on Crockern Tor and served as the Stannary table". The Devon tin miners were not subject to English Common Law but their activities were governed by Stannary Law, a privilege granted to them by the Crown. The special laws of the Stannary Law were enacted at Parliaments or Great Courts held at Crockern Tor.
