Great Staple Tor
Great Staple Tor was called Great Steeple Tor by Burnard. Great Staple Tor is on a ridge above the River Walkham. The placename 'staple' derives from the word meaning tower, and alludes to the tor's granite formations which are said to resemble the towers of a great gateway. These formations, where granite blocks perch on top of each other, are sometimes referred to as steeples.
