Merrivale Stone Row

Merrivale Stone Row

Stone rows were erected during prehistoric times. They may comprise single, double or triple lines of stones. Over sixty stone rows have been recorded on Dartmoor. The purpose of the stone rows is not known but they probably had a ritual significance. The Merrivale Stone Row in the photograph has two lines of about a hundred stones in each. The lines are about a metre apart and run approximately east-west.
