George French at Foale's Arrishes Prehistoric Settlement
The prehistoric settlement of Foale's Arrishes is particularly important to the study of Dartmoor because excavations here have produced early iron age pottery. This suggests that occupation of the Moor lasted into the early iron age, rather than ending in the bronze age when climate conditions made living on Dartmoor an impossibility. This is much longer than many archaeologists first thought. George French was a notable Dartmoor personality and had a very active public life, including being a Justice of the Peace for Devon from 1912. As this image shows, he also aided Robert Burnard and Rev. S. Baring-Gould in preserving many of the prehistoric settlements on Dartmoor.
