Bowerman's Nose
The photograph was taken on 28 August 1889. Bowerman's Nose is an impressive rock pillar. One legend goes that Bowerman was a huntsman and one day while out hunting with his hounds he was chasing a hare who actually was a witch. She led him a merry dance and in crossing this hillside near Manaton she turned round and turned him and his hounds into stone. There was once a John Bowerman who was buried at North Bovey in 1663.
