Cranmere Pool

Cranmere Pool

Cranmere Pool is supposed to to be named from 'crane-mere' where crane was the Dartmoor name for a heron and the pool contained fish or amphibians which attracted heron. Antiquarians report that at one time the pool was about 220 yards in circumference with an average depth of five feet. Cranmere Pool is the location of one of the famous Dartmoor 'letter boxes'. In 1854 a cairn was built at the pool with a glass jar in which visitors placed visiting-cards. By 1889 a tin box had replaced the glass jar and in 1912 a purpose-built post box was installed.
