Stones in river above Two Bridges
Burnard describes this photograph taken on 19 April 1889 as the "remains of Cyclopean Bridge above Two Bridges". Burnard's Cyclopean bridges are what are now called 'Clapper Bridges', which were built for packhorses to cross rivers and streams. The stones across the river in the photograph may only be stepping stones for people to cross the river. The stones are unlikely to be the pillars for the Beardown clapper bridge (which is upriver from Two Bridges) as this bridge was presumably intact in 1889 since it was destroyed in the flood of 1890. The Cowsic River joins the West Dart River just north of Two Bridges and it is not known on which river the stones in the photograph are located.
