Higher Merripit

Higher Merripit is a farm about two miles north-east of Postbridge. It is on the edge of the rough moorland. Burnard says the farm was "one of the oldest, if not the oldest, in the Forest of Dartmoor". Crossing includes Lower Merripit (but not Higher Merripit) in his list of the thirty-five ancient farms that were probably in existence before Dartmoor became a royal hunting forest during the twelfth century. However Higher Merripit is located two miles north-west of Lower Merripit and is closer to the rough moorland. It is suggested that one of these two great Dartmoor historians may have been misled.
