Hut or cache near Stalldown Barrow
Burnard described the photograph as "hut or cache on stream leading down from Stalldon Moor to the Erme". Stalldon Moor is now called Stalldown Barrow. The photograph is possibly of the tinners' cache known as //Downing's House//. A tinners' cache is a stone built structure, often roofless, used by tin miners to store equipment. These were found on Dartmoor in areas where tin mining was common. Crossing describes //Downing's House// as "the best example of a miners' cache to be found on Dartmoor. It is on the left bank of a little stream. The entrance is on the higher side. In approaching it upstream it has the appearance of a grass covered mound".
