Hartyland

Hartyland

Hartyland (called Hartland by Burnard) is a farm about two miles north-west of Postbridge. It is on the edge of the rough moorland. Burnard says the farm was the birthplace of Jonas Coaker , the Dartmoor Poet, in 1801. Crossing states that Hartyland is a farm of great antiquity. It is one of thirty-five ancient farms that were probably in existence before Dartmoor became a royal hunting forest during the twelfth century. The tenants of the farms have certain privileges in respect of land use and moorland grazing.
