Downings House

Burnard described the photograph as "hut or cache on stream leading down from Stalldon Moor to the Erme". Stalldon Moor is now called Stalldown Barrow. The photograph is almost certainly of the tinners' cache known as Downing's House. A tinners' cache is a stone built structure, used by tin miners to store equipment and smelted tin. These are found on Dartmoor in areas where tin mining was common. Crossing describes Downing's House as "the best example of a miners' cache to be found on Dartmoor. It is on the left bank of a little stream. The entrance is on the higher side. In approaching it upstream it has the appearance of a grass covered mound".
