Tomb of Rajah Brooke of Sarawak, Sheepstor
Tomb of James Brooke, first Raja of Sarawak. James was a Victorian adventurer who, having helped the Sultan of Brunei to quell a Dayak rebellion, was made Raja of Sarawak (north-western Borneo). He was granted the Burrator estate by the British Crown for services to the Empire and is buried in this grand tomb (of Aberdeen granite!) in Sheepstor churchyard. He was succeeded by a nephew and grand-nephew as 2nd and 3rd Rajas. They are also buried in the churchyard. The story is told in the church and on the Legendary Dartmoor website.
