The Green at Sourton
Originally three separate dwellings, this cottage later became a single dwelling. Five generations of Heathmans lived there and ran an undertaking business from the cottage. They found other employment at the local quarry of Meldon, and as coachbuilders and wheelwrights. In the 1920s Mirian Heathman also ran a general stores and teashop in the cottage - the sign announcing "Teas" can be seen in this photograph. When telephone services came to the village, it was Miriam Heathman who had a phone installed at the shop which villagers came to use. Several children - probably of the Heathman family - can be seen playing in front of the house.
