Thomas and Miriam Heathman in front of The Green at Sourton

The Heathmans can be seen standing outside their cottage at Sourton. Originally three separate dwellings, this cottage later became a single dwelling. Five generations of Heathmans lived there and ran an undertaking business from the cottage. The men found other employment at the local quarry of Meldon, and as coachbuilders and wheelwrights. In the 1920s Miriam Heathman also ran a general stores and teashop in the cottage. When telephone services came to the village, it was Miriam Heathman who had a phone installed at the shop which villagers came to use. In the background the Heathman's car can be seen - one of the first in the village.
