Snow scene 1963
This picture of a street in the South Tawton area, demonstrates the sheer depth of snow which fell heavily over the U.K. and particularly Dartmoor during the 1963 'Big Freeze'. The snow wreaked havoc in Dartmoor, especially to those living in the more isolated communities. Emergency supplies had to be carried away on sleighs, elderly residents had to be airlifted to safety, fodder and rations had to be dropped to stranded livestock and families had to dig themselves out of their own houses. With even some reports of waterfalls partially freezing, and parts of Dartmoor being cut off for over eight weeks, it remains to be one of the coldest winters in recorded British history.
