Stonemason's yard
Stonemason's yard in South Tawton with sculpture. Email from Ms. Cooper - "My grandfather, Bertram Gratton of Rose Cottage, Belstone was a monumental mason whose open workshop was at Prospect near South Zeal. One of his commissions was the production of two giant tortoises in granite for a garden in the Ashdown Forest area. Apparently he bought a live tortoise which lived on the site to use as a model!! I think this was during the 1930/40s. My grandfather is 2nd left in white sitting on the unfinished tortoise. He made many headstones which may be seen in most of the churchyards in the area – unfortunately they cannot be identified as though many masons put their names on their headstones my grandfather refused to ‘advertise on the dead’."
