Cawsand Beacon from South Tawton
The Cawsand Beacon ranges 1,789 ft around South Tawton, and affords the viewer impressive views of the surrounding area, including glimpses of the English Channel and Bude. Evidence of Bronze Age settlements can be found on the slopes of the hills, including burial sites, known as kist-vaens and stone circles. This photograph shows some of the cottages, found just South of the Sticklepath area, which are incidentally near to an area of abandoned copper mines. There are (or were) an interesting selection of ancient houses in the South Tawton parish, having once being the seat of the Oxenham family since the time of Henry III. As such they have been called the 'mansions' of the Moorland gentry. Of the few that still stand proud today are registered as British listed buildings.
