Old Shute House: courtyard, Shute

Shute Barton, near Seaton. Dating from medieval times, it was the home of the Bonville and later the Grey families. Forfeited to the Crown after the death of Lady Jane Grey, it later passed to the Pole family. Sir William Pole demolished part of it when he had a new house built in the 18th Century (see Pevsner: Buildings of England).
