1WW HOSPITAL WARD IN OLDWAY MANSION, PAIGNTON

The opulent Singer family's mansion in Paignton was transformed into a War Hospital at the beginning of the 1WW by the American Women's War Relief Committee, a group of wealthy, well connected American women resident in the UK. As the American War Hospital it treated British and Commonwealth troops, Some had gunshot or shell wounds, and others were suffering from cold injuries. A well equipped operating theatre was provided by the Committee. When the Americans joined the War effort, the Hospital became the responsibility of the American Red Cross and treated American servicemen.
