1WW SOLDIERS OF THE 6TH DEVONS AT WOODBURY CAMP ON WOODBURY COMMON 1914

Soldiers of the 6th Devons at Woodbury Camp on Woodbury Common 1914. At the outbreak of the War, the 5th and 6th Devons were sent to Plymouth then moved to Salisbury. Later the 6th Battalion sailed for Mesopotamia fighting the Turks near Kut. The youthfulness of the person sitting at the front and some of the others leads to questions of whether they group are a mix of Militia and cadets. Note the swagger sticks carried by the two Non Commissioned Officers (NCOs) and two of the privates. The group are posed besides the accommodation bell tents a with a marquee, probably used for messing and instruction, behind them.
