1WW SACKS OF WHEAT STORED IN SOUTH MOLTON PANNIER MARKET
Food shortages, due in part to German U-Boat blockading the United Kingdom through intensive action in the Atlantic, caused problematic food shortages for Britain both on the Home Front and for the military serving abroad. Stockpiling food helped even out the supply of essential commodities. Here 28, 000 bushels (1,018,324 kilogrammes) of wheat are stored in the Pannier Market in South Molton in 1917.
