1WW WVMD DRIVERS IN MORETONHAMPSTEAD
Women Volunteer Motor Drivers (WVMD) at their Moretonhampstead HQ c.1917. The photograph shows some of their members outside the White Hart garage in Moreton. Originally formed from among women chauffeuses, who were already doing voluntary work, their aim was to provide transport and drivers for activities associated with the War on the Home Front. Following the War they helped returning servicemen learn to drive. It appears that the driver and the lady sitting on the running board have similar hats with a badge, which indicates a uniform. It would be interesting to know more about the organisation, the identity of the ladies and the make of the car .
