1WW WORKERS AT THE HEATHCOAT MUNITIONS DEPARTMENT
Before the War only a small percentage of factory workers were women. Many domestic industries gave themselves over to creating materiel for the war effort. Here we see the mainly female workforce at the Tiverton Heathcoat Munitions Department in 1917, formerly a textile mill. The event being celebrated in 1917 is the production of a hundred thousand (100,000) shell cases.
