1WW MEN OF THE 8TH DEVONS BILLETED AT THE BARTONS, DAWLISH IN 1914

Believed to be men of the 8th Battalion of The Devonshire Regiment billeted in the Bartons near Dawlish with landlord of the Red Lion, Mr Dowling, and his wife outside the public house. The slate held by the seated Sergeant shows Red Lion and below a word beginning with S. Judging by the number of cap badges that are missing and the relaxed soldiers, the soldiers could have been celebrating.
