Dartmoor farm

Dartmoor farm

This photograph shows a typical Dartmoor farm. A single storied building, possibly the farmhouse in the foreground is probably built from cob; the roof material is difficult to identify. The walls and chimney stack have been whitewashed. In front of the building is an open yard and behind it an enclosed area with a barn or shed. This second building has a roof of corrugated iron; as has the small extension on the front of the farmhouse. Cob is a traditional building material on the moor. It is composed of mud/ clay and straw. Today arts and craft projects support the traditional building crafts and workshops can be found in different parts of the country to keep the traditional skills alive.
