Kelly Mine Collection
Kelly Mine, located on the eastern edge of Dartmoor in Devon, England, is a disused metalliferous mine that operated intermittently from the 1790s until 1951. It was primarily worked for micaceous haematite, also known as "shiny ore," which, while unsuitable for iron production, found a valuable use in the manufacture of corrosion-resistant paint. This unique application allowed the mine to remain active well into the 20th century, driven by the demand for protecting the steel structures of the industrial age.
Today, Kelly Mine stands as a significant industrial heritage site, meticulously restored and preserved by the Kelly Mine Preservation Society. Visitors can explore the mine and its machinery, gaining insight into the fascinating history of this once-thriving operation.
