Fingle Bridge

This photograph is believed to be of Fingle bridge on the River Teign. There has been a bridge at this point on the river since at least the 1600's and it is a major crossing point on the river between Moretonhampstead and Drewsteignton. The present bridge was built for packhorses and small carts, and is about seven feet wide; it has passing places for pedestrians but was not designed to cope with modern traffic, especially large vehicles. There was a mill for grinding corn nearby; and the bridge was used for the transport of the corn as well as other local goods and materials- wood, farm produce etc. Fingle Bridge is a popular spot on the moor- for locals and visitors alike. Fishermen, walkers, daytrippers find it an attractive location and there is a Fingle Bridge inn for refreshment just by the bridge.
