Ponies on Dartmoor

A herd of Dartmoor ponies photographed on a small rock outcrop on the moor. The herd includes several smaller ponies, possibly the young foals in their first year. On clear days, the visibility from these high viewpoint is truly impressive. The Dartmoor pony is one of the breeds native to the British Isles. These small, sturdy ponies are suited to the rough grazing and sometimes poor weather on the open moor. They are now officially an endangered species and since 1988 a programme to maintain the pure breed has been in operation.
